Some Software
Some useful free software, mostly for Linux
-
APT for RPM lets you use the convenient apt tool on an rpm-based system. Synaptic is a GUI for APT.
-
Checkinstall can easily create an rpm from a source package.
-
Bash programmable completion is the best thing invented since sliced bread.
-
webCDwriter is a useful server-program that lets your network share a cd-writer.
-
CUPS is an excellent cross-platform printing solution. Scrap that old LPD/LPR/LPRng!
-
Postfix is a very good replacement for the ancient sendmail.
-
mplayer is simply the best media player around.
-
album is a nice command-line tool that generates HTML photo albums. There is a GUI for it if you really need it. Nowadays I normally use Apache::Gallery instead.
-
cdlabelgen is another convenient command-line tool for making CD jewel case inserts or CD envelopes.
-
ImageMagick is invaluable for converting images from one format to another. But it does a lot more.
-
Scribus is an excellent desktop publishing program for Linux.
-
TNEF provides a way to unpack those pesky Microsoft MS-TNEF MIME attachments.
-
The Gimp is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.
-
gPhoto2 is a set of digital camera software applications for Unix-like systems.
-
giFT is my favorite p2p program.
-
Umbrello is an UML modeller.
-
Kile is a program for KDE 3, that integrates many tools needed to develop documents with LaTeX, in just one application.
-
Cervisia is a graphical frontend for the CVS client. Normally not needed, but still pretty nice.
-
I am an XEmacs guy, in case you wonder.
Here is stuff for you who still are using windooze
-
GNUWin is a nice compilation of free and open source software for windows.
-
Knoppix lets you run Linux on your computer without installing it. Might even save your day when you ordinary OS has freaked out on you.
