Equation editor applet with TeX output for the Web
With the development of On-line Education resources, an increasing number of
engineering courses (see e.g. [1,2]) are confronted with the problem of rendering
algebraic expressions in a web browser.
This can easily be achieved with pictures in a static document (such as a syllabus),
but becomes increasingly cumbersome when the material is generated in a dynamic
manner (quiz questions, discussion forum, etc).
A viable solution using mathematical symbols in the web browser has been proposed
using TeX as an input, but has the limitation of asking that students
learn what remains an unnecessarily cryptic language.
This project aims at symplifying the task for the students, by developping a
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You GET) equation editor where mathematical
formulae will be constructed using simple drag and drop opearations with the
mouse.
The project is simple from the theoretical point of view, but requires
considerable programming skills to develop a useful application in Java or,
better, in Jython.
