1. Introduction

KTH Elvin is an Elvin messaging client software developed to work on the Sony Ericsson P800 Symbian operating system.

Elvin is a content-based messaging system. See the Elvin home page for more info: http://elvin.dstc.com/. KTH Elvin supports the Elvind v4.0.3 Elvin Server, and the Tickertape v1.3 message type.

KTH Elvin was developed as a project in the course 2D1954 Programutvecklingsprojekt at Nada, KTH.

2. Installation

Please use your telephone's instruction manual on how to install a software on the mobile phone.

3. User Instructions

3.1 Setup Preferences

Before using the application, some preferences needs to be set up. From the main program view, select Preferences in the Elvin menu.

The preferences view has fields for editing User Name, the Elvin Server, Add/Remove Groups to which the client is subscribing and the Message List Size. See sections further down for detailed descriptions of these.

When changes to the preferences has been made, you need to press the OK button to confirm and save the changes. If Cancel is pressed, the old preferences will be set to the old settings. This also applies to any Groups added or deleted.

3.1.1 User Name

To change or set your User Name, enter your desired name in the User Name field.

3.1.2 Elvin Server

To use the Elvin, a connection to a Server is needed. Enter the address to the Server in the Elvin Server Address field.

You can also enter the Port address if needed. Normally, you don't need to change this setting.

3.1.3 Add Groups

To receive Elvin Tickertape messages, You will need to subscribe to one or more groups.

You can add new groups for subscription by typing the desired group name in the Add Group field and then clicking the Add button.

Please remember that You must press the OK button to save the new preferences.

3.1.4 Group List, Removing Groups

Use the Groups drop-down list to view which groups the client currently subscribes to.

You can remove groups that You no longer want to subscribe to by selecting that group in the list and then pressing the Delete button.

3.1.5 Message List Size

The Message List Size preference setting controls how many messages are to be saved in the Message List. If the Message List is full and new messages arrive, the oldest will be deleted.

3.2 Connection

3.2.1 Connect to Server

In order to send and receive messages, a connection to the server must be established. From the Connection menu, choose Connect to connect to the server. If You are not already connected to the Internet via GRPS, a GPRS connection dialog window will appear. When connected to the Internet, the application will try to establish a connection to the Elvin server.
When the connection has been established, a window displaying the text "Connection established" will appear. You will now start to receive messages sent to the groups You have set for subscription, and You can now also send messages.

3.2.1 Disconnect from Server

  When You no longer want to be connected to the Elvin server, select Disconnect from the Connection menu. The client will now disconnect from the Server.

3.3 Message List

From the Message List view You can see the messages that have arrived The list displays the user name followed by the beginning of the message content. New messages appear in the top of the list.

You can delete messages from the list by marking the message You want to delete and then press the Delete button at the bottom.

Your own sent messages will also appear in the list, because You can only send messages to groups You subscribe to.

3.4 Read Message

To read the complete content of a message, mark it in the list and then press the Read button at the bottom. The chosen message will now appear in a new view.

At the top some info about the message is displayed.

From: The user that sent the message.
Group: To which group the message it was sent.
Date: The date, in local time, when the message arrived.

Below, the message content is displayed. Use the bar to scroll if the message is longer than the display area.

At the bottom there are two buttons. Reply will open up a new view where You can reply to the message. Close will close this view and return to the Message List.

3.5 Compose Message

To compose a New Message, choose New Message from the Elvin menu. This will open up a new view where You can compose the message.

At the top of this view there is a drop-down list Group. Choose the group to which You want to send the message.

Enter your message in the white text area below.

When You are done, press the Send button to send the message. This will close down this view and return to the Message List. If the connection is working properly, your message will momentarily arrive to the list.

Press Cancel to return to the Message List without sending the message.

If the application of some reason is shut down during the composition of a message, the message You are typing will be saved and restored once You re-enter the New Message view.
