"An Interactive Interface for a service robot - Design and
Elin Anna Topp, guest master student at CAS/CVAP

This thesis describes the design and experimental implementation
of an interactive interface for a service robot. Based on some principles
of interaction, the work concentrates on two aspects:
a) why and how would a user prefer to communicate with a service
robot and which system components are needed to handle a respective
b) the user has to be assured, that she is in the focus of attention,
when communicating with the robot.
In order to handle these aspects, a minimum set of sensory input
types and modalities is proposed: Laser range data combined with
vision for robust detection and tracking of the user and spoken
control input and context based gesture recognition for the communication.
The latter is taken into account for an example teaching scenario
to point out the advantages of a context based integration of speech
and gestures for the communication. An underlying question is, how
the integration of different components can be done on a high level
of abstraction, so that components can be kept independent and simple.
