The KeLP infrastructure is a set of C++ class libraries designed to reduce the development time of various irregular scientific computations running on distributed memory parallel computers.

Most KeLP applications have a layered design, in which a domain specific library, specialized to the application, is constructed on top of KeLP. KeLP's provides only seven core abstractions abstractions. Four of them are hardware independent; the remaining three may be _retargetted_ according to the specifics of data motion within the underlying hardware.

I will discuss the basic KeLP model, a domain specific library, and an example of how we re-targeted KeLP to multi-tier execution on clusters of symmetric multiprocessors.

CAS-seminarium: A Hybrid Distributed Computer Vision System for Man-Machine-Interaction

Abstract

Man-Machine-Interaction in real environments is one of the greatest challenges for a number of scientific fields related to Computer Vision, Speech Understanding, and Robotics. At the University of Bielefeld the joint project "Situated Artificial Communicators" has been established with the goal to develop an integrated system where visual, linguistic, senso-motoric, and cognitive abilities interact. The system plays the role of a communicator in a situation where the visual interpretation of the environment, speech understanding, and the cooperative interaction with a human being is necessary. The basic setting is fixed to the assembly of toy airplanes using a wooden construction kit. The system development is guided by results in the field of cognitive science and by empirical data achieved from psycholinguistic experiments. Nevertheless, the technical realization with suitable processing tunes is a main emphasis in order to create a platform for experiments in man-machine-interaction.

In the presentation mainly the visual components, their interaction, and organization will be addressed. According to the overall tasks, the conceptualization of visual cues and the use of utterances for visual search are necessary. Detection and recognition of objects, description and reconstruction of scenes are major subtasks. In order to satisfy cognitive as well as technical requirements both numerical, i.e. neural networks and statistical approaches, and knowledge based techniques have to incorporate. Furthermore, incremental and asynchronous processing in a distributed environment must be performed.
