Schedule for Spring 2000

Content

Human dialogue concepts and methods of analysis. Face-to-face communication; non-verbal communication. The impact of the medium on dialogue processes. Models for human-machine dialogue; dialogue management. Spoken human-machine dialogue. Multi-modal dialogues for HMI applications.

Goals

To give participants basic knowledge of human dialogue principles, and how they apply within HMI areas such as communication in digital media and the design of natural language interfaces.

Prerequisites

Knowledge corresponding to a basic course in human-computer interaction is required. Participants are expected to contribute with their own research problems within an area related to dialogue or natural language interfaces.

Literature

A collection of articles will be distributed.

Examination

Active participation in seminars. A research paper applying the course concepts and methods to dialogue data from a selected HMI area.
