Abstract

Advanced course in computer science focusing on mathematical modelling and simulation of nerve cells, networks of nerve cells and other physiological and biochemical structures and processes.

Goals

The goal of the course is to give the students

• basic knowledge about mathematical modelling of biological systems and processes,

so that they will

• have knowledge of available methods in the field and an understanding for the technical potential and limitations of these methods.

Syllabus

Methods for modelling and simulation of nerve cells and networks of nerve cells. Kinetics of enzymes and drugs, dynamics of drugs. Methods for modelling of cellular processes and cell signals in other systems and organisms (pancreas, blood, yeast cells). The functional organization of the nervous system and related models and theories for perception, memory, selection of behavior and movement.

Prerequisites

The mandatory courses in mathematics, numerical analysis and computer science or the equivalent and the following two courses: 7E1200 Molecular Biology and 7E1201 Neuro-Science.

Examination

A written examination (TEN1; 3 cr.).
Laboratory assignments (LAB1; 1 cr.).

Remarks

The course will be given for the first time in 99/00. The courses 2D1432 Artificial Neural Networks and Other Learning Systems and 2D1434 Mathematical Modelling of Biological Systems will then replace the course 2D1430 Artificial Neural Networks and Neural Physiology.
