Theoretical approaches to cooperative work

14 March 2001
Maria Normark

CSCW research focused on cooperative work is largely influenced by sociology theory and methods. It was found, when beginning to problematize the use of groupware, that rather little was known of how people work in groups and also how the tools they have at hand help them to coordinate their activities.  To understand the mechanisms better, researcher use frameworks like ethnomethodology and coordination mechanisms to analyze the work.

I will give an introduction to the theories which will be used in this part of the course, introduce the researchers and work that are considered important.
