Humans and other intelligent creatures are capable of managing in an unknown environment and performing various tasks, dealing with unexpected event and acquiring new skills. These behaviours are displayed in close interaction with the surrounding world and involves intensive collection, processing, storage and retrieval of information, based on our senses and experience. It is obvious that if technological realizations of autonomous agents with even a fraction of such capabilities were available, they would have a wide range of applications. Such systems would be able to act for extended periods of time in unknown environments while solving problems and attaining goals, improving their performance through adaptation and learning, co-existing and cooperating with other autonomously behaving agents. These properties would be extremely useful in a multitude of industrial, domestic and societal applications.

Research   To construct such systems there is a need for research in a number of different component techniques to provide the needed competencies, but more important, there is a need for an interdisciplinary effort that enables integration of the different techniques into fully operational systems. The Centre for Autonomous Systems is a new research centre that carries out research and provides education with respect to such systems.

CAS is an immaterial centre composed of four research groups from three out of the five schools at KTH. The participating groups are: Computational Vision and Active Perception (CVAP), Nada; Dept. of Signals, Sensors and Systems (S3); Dept. of Optimization and Systems Theory (OPTSYST) and Mechatronics Group, Dept. of Machine Design (DAMEK).

Funding & Partners   The centre is sponsored by the Foundation for Strategic Research. In addition a graduate school in Autonomous Systems forms an integral part of the centre.

Industrial partners are ABB, Electrolux, CelsiusTech Electronics, Permobil and WEDA Poolcleaner
