Few people would object to the necessity of involving users in systems development. In reality, however, user participation is often concentrated to the early phases of modelling and analysis, and usability activities are scheduled late in the project, if included at all. These activities are often performed by a UCD (User Centred Design) facilitator and/or an HCI expert. The actual user interface design is done with a minimum amount of communication with the users, in as little time as possible. Moreover, in traditional systems development, there are few methods for user interface design, and the user interface designer is often a software engineer. So, how do we bring the user interface design process and the UCD process together?
This workshop focuses on certain issues regarding how to make UCD help the interface designers in their work and help them meet their deadlines, i.e. how to make the UCD process usable for its users - i.e. the systems developers and designers. Such issues include, for instance
Organisational aspects - how do we create a cultural context for UCD in the organisation and in the project? Roles - how does UCD change the role and work of the designer? Tools - do prototypes and mock-ups help in creating a shared understanding of the context?
For the purpose of this workshop we would like to define UCD in accordance with ISO/DIS 13407 (Human Centred Design Process for Interactive Systems) which specifies the following four principles for UCD:
The workshop is a two-day event and includes the following activities:
The participants will be expected to read the accepted position papers in advance.
The results of the workshop will be summarised by the organisers and distributed for discussion and further elaboration. The goal is to produce a workshop summary in a scientific publication.
Participation is limited. To join the workshop, you should submit a position paper describing one or more case studies relating to one or several of the items listed above. The paper should also include the main issues that the you would like to discuss during the workshop.
The paper should focus on the interface design process in a UCD context. You are encouraged to include URLs related to UCD and user interface design (bibliographies, papers, projects, tools, systems). The position papers should be no more than 2000 words, submitted electronically as html, text or a Word file. A short biography of the authors should also be supplemented. Please, try to relate the position paper to the results of thePDC '98 workshop, if possible (published in CID-40)
Send all submissions electronically to alz@nada.kth.se. Accepted position papers will be distributed prior to the workshop.
CID is the Centre for user oriented IT design at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. This interdisciplinary competence centre focuses on the design of usable, innovative IT. CID has a working group with the specific aim of promoting a user oriented approach to all the research and development activities within the centre.
Jan Gulliksen, Ph.D. in Systems Analysis performs research on user centred design in several applied projects (e.g. with the Swedish National Tax Board) at Uppsala University. Jan is also supervising the working group on user orientation at CID.
Ann Lantz, Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, working with user oriented system design and communities at CID and a project on knowledge exchange, communication and context in electronic networks.
Inger Boivie, MSc, works as a consultant with user centred design and usability related activities in a software engineering company. Inger also works part-time in the CID working group for user orientation.
