Information on 2D1274, Elektromagnetiska beräkningar
The course in
Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) fall '06 surveys the
mathematics and numerics for three classes of formulations, Maxwell
Equations as PDE in the time and frequency domain; Integral equation
formulations for the frequency domain, and High-frequency
approximations (HF). The schedule (preliminary, see below) is for a
5-credit course with twelve meetings, homework/projects, Q&A-sessions
to get started with labs, and a written examination.
The course
is intended for graduate and last year students in scientific
computing, theoretical electromagnetics, and other interested
parties.
The first meeting is TUE Oct 17 15-17 in room 1537, Osquars B. 2
Outline
Survey of Mathematics and numerics
Maxwell Eqns. Time domain finite difference; Boundary conditions,
sources; Subgrid models;
Frequency domain element methods and couplings, e.g. applied to
wave-guides.
Field Integral equations. EFIE and MFIE, finite elements and
collocation, element properties, convergence. Iterative solution methods and
pre-conditioners. Fast methods, multi-poles and wavelets.

Laboratory Work
The laboratory work consists of homework and computer experiments
carried out by groups of no more than two students. Each group hands
in a report on each HOMEWORK to an instructor, or in the NADA
mailboxes (Osquars B. 2, bottom floor, and level 4) (NOT the
instructors' mail stops !).
Each group shall also make an oral presentation of one of the
labs.
You can also fax lab reports, 08/7900930
att. J.Oppelstrup. The deadline is Jan 12, 2007. Anything handed in
after the deadline may take a long time to be graded.
Lab 1:
FDTD 1D & 2D; Non-reflective boundaries, sources (Huygens surfaces)
ps-file Lab 1
Lab 1 geom file
Lab 2:
FE for eigenfrequencies of cavity, node and edge elements;
MATLAB code from book can be downloaded from the url given in
introductory chapter; Instructions Lab 2 (same as under Course News above) pdf here
Lab 3:
Cancelled:
Quasi-steady equations, 2D Eddy Currents in axisymmetric model,
magnetic vector potential formulation, Comsol Multiphysics
cancelled
Lab 3:
Boundary integral (MoM) for TM wave scattering on PEC
and dielectric cylinder. See lecture notes above, and copy
from Wang handed out Nov. 21.
Lab3 PEC exact sol (m-file)
Lab3 DIEL exact sol (m-file)
The NADA computers are available for computer work.
No specific bookings have been made for the course.
You may need a CSC account. Sign the name list sent round and after
a few days go to the CSC help desk "Delfi" (Osquars B. 2)
Delfi to
obtain an account.
Discussions of homework and assignments with your fellow
students are encouraged. We hope that those of you who are more
experienced in some theoretical aspect, or in the use of computers,
will give advice to others. The assignment reports should be clearly
written and easy to read for the grader:
Mere sheaves of computer plots and printed output
will not be accepted.
Exams
The examination paper will be written with closed books. The first
exam will be given around Dec 15, according to agreement with students.
The next will be given in January. Further on, by
popular request only.
Dec 15, 9-12, close to room 1521 (instructor's office)
Here is an example of an old exam paper:
Exam Dec 17, 1999 (ps file)
The NADA Terminal Rooms
The student union magnetic card gives access to the NADA terminal
rooms around the clock, but daytime they are often booked for other
courses.
Student's comments
The course will be evaluated at the end when you will be asked to fill
in a standard course evaluation form, but any comments along the way
are most welcome !
